Antioxidants prevent damage to healthy cells by bonding with free radicals.
Every cell in our bodies needs oxygen to survive. It is therefore ironic that oxygen is also responsible for damaging cells through a process called oxidation. When oxidation occurs “free radicals” are formed with have the ability to damage cells. Free radicals are substances that contain unpaired electrons due to the fact they have either lost or gained an electron. You don’t need to be a science major to realize that too many free radicals in your body left unchecked, and you are jeopardizing your health.

Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants.
Antioxidants are molecules which can safely interact with free radicals and terminate the chain reaction before vital molecules are damaged.
What are Free Radicals – Free radicals can occur due to infection or inflammation, certain environmental conditions such as smoking or air pollution of exposure to pesticides and insecticides. When free radicals are allowed to do damage over prolonged periods of time they can lead to diseases such as cancer and heart issues. Anti oxidants are vitamins, minerals as well as a variety of plants which are used to reverse the affects of oxidation to some extent.
